49 Degrees North – Sounds like a peculiar name, you must be wondering.  This ski resort, which opened up in 1972, is in fact 48.3 degrees north about 50 miles from the north of the international border of Canada. Though the resort derives its names from its latitudinal position, it is in fact not the accurate position. Some facts to ponder over!

The resort is located in the western part of the United States, and is a ski resort that finds itself located in the Colville National Forest in Stevens County, Washington. It is at a distance of 10 miles (16 km) east of Chewelah and 42 miles (68 km) north of Spokane which makes it readily available from the highways connecting these towns.



The resort lays claim to a lift-served vertical drop of 1851 feet. The base at 49 degrees north ski resort is at an elevation of 3,923 feet (1,196 m) from the sea level while the highest peak is located at an altitude of 5,774 feet (1,760 m) on Chewelah Mountain, which gives a vertical drop of 1,851 feet (564 m). The resort experiences an annual snowfall of about 301 inches.

The  49 Degrees North Resort has a total skiable area of around 2325 acres which is readily available by the lifts. There is a total of 82 runs out of which 30% are beginner runs, 40% account as the intermediate runs, 45% are advanced runs, and 5% of the runs are exclusive for the experts. The longest run spans an area of 2.75 miles. The resort also features two terrain parks. The cross country trail area in the resort runs around 16 km.


With each lift having a carrying capacity of 6600 persons per hour, the resort feature seven lifts in total out of which one is a quad lift, one is a surface lift and the remaining five account for double chairs lifts. This makes 49 Degrees North Resort one of the best places to visit with your friends and have a really amazing time out there.

The room price ranges from $ 54- $ 109 in the above mentioned resorts. For cheaper options, visitors can choose from Knights Inn Spokane North or Howard Johnson Inn Spokane North where you can get pretty nice and comfortable rooms under $ 50.




The resort is priced at $55 for an adult lift ticket and $ 725 for an adult season pass. Not the cheapest as compared to other ski resorts, the price range scores a bit more than the average ones. But compared to the skiable area provided, you can surely say that it is of value to the dollar.




Apart from skiing, the 82 runs, two terrain parks and seven lifts, 49 Degrees North Resort also offers Nordic and Alpine Skiing. Night Skiing is available only for a limited period of time and for a quite short area.
