James Niehues who started painting in Grade 9, and painted his first ski map in 1988 has now painted over 250 mountain trail maps for nearly 200 ski resorts around the world, including Whistler Blackcomb, Grouse Mountain, Sun Peaks and Revelstoke in B.C.
He has painted all the trail maps by his own hand and told that a painting is superior to a photograph when it comes to ski trails because the artist has the flexibility to draw directions to individual slopes. He added “before painting a mountain ski trail map, the artist takes aerial photos of the mountain from a plane to get images that come right from a bird’s eye view. This gives him to get a vivid image of what he must translate for skiers”.
Niehues is now releasing a coffee table book “The Man Behind the Map” which will be available on pre-order now and will be releasing on the summer of 2019. It will be the complete collection of James Niehues mountain trail painting and documenting his 30-year career.
