Mikaela Shiffrin was crowned as the winner of overall World Cup champion for the third straight year. The scheduled weekend events in Sochi was canceled due to the bad weather. The 23-year-old American skier (Mikaela Shiffrin)who had opted not to race this weekend and is training in Italy has a 719-point lead over second-placed Petra Vlhova with a maximum of 700 points now remaining this season. The Confirmation about her overall crown came as she sat in a hotel room in Italy where the American has been training ahead of the World Cup finals in Andorra later this month.
“It’s quite strange because I am sitting here right now on my bed,” Shiffrin mentioned in a video posted on Twitter.
After years of dominating women’s slalom, Mikaela Shiffrinemerged as a super-G star with victories in Lake Louise, St. Moritz and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Only the legendary Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell, who has won five in a row (1971-75), stands ahead of the Mikaela Shiffrin, who is breaking a string of records with her dominant displays. She has already matched the Swiss great Vreni Schneider’s record of 14 World Cup victories in a season. She will compete in next week’s racing in the Czech Republic before World Cup finals where she will look to grab the super-G and giant slalom crowns.
