The Purgatory Ski Resort was the original name of this resort. But, in between for a short duration till May 2015 it was known as Durango Mountain Resort. It first became operational in the year 1965. The original owner of the Purgatory Ski Resort was Ray Duncan. But in May 2015 a person named James Coleman bought the resort, and he changed the name of the resort to the original. It is a famous destination for everyone who loves skiing.

The Purgatory Ski Resort also provides world class lodging facility to its visitors. The visitors can take the condos on rent for a comfortable stay. The visitors who like to party can spend their time in the nightclub cum bar which is situated at the bottom of the ski slopes. The Purgatory Ski Resort also provides the facility of chairlifts for going from condos to the surrounding areas. The Resort is also equipped with a shuttle which commutes between the resort and the nearby town of Durango. To provide training for skiing to the interested visitors, the Purgatory Ski Resort also has a ski school. This resort also takes special care of the health and well-being of the visitors, and for this, an emergency care clinic is situated in the resort premises. This clinic is well equipped by health care providers to provide any emergency assistance to the visitors. The Purgatory Ski Patrol is employed to carry the injured skiers from the mountain slopes to the emergency care clinic. This diminishes any chances of casualty due to the injuries.

The Purgatory Ski Area promises an ever before experience to its visitors and it definitely fulfills its promise to the fullest. It was originally built by Ray Duncan in the year 1965. The Purgatory Resort has 85 trails in total. It also has two terrain parks for the visitors. The resort has dedicated a special area to the young snowboarders. The area designed exclusively for the young snowboarders has three sections namely Burton Riglet Park, Pitchfork Terrain Garden and the Paradise Freestyle Arena. The total skiable area of the Purgatory Ski Resort is 1,360 acres. This resort has 88 trails in total. Out of the total 88 trails, 23% are of beginner level, 51% are of an intermediate level and remaining 26% are of advanced level.

There are ten ski lifts in total in the resort. It also includes one “Flying Couch” which can carry six persons at a time. It is also called “Six pack.” One high-speed quad lift is also provided for the conveyance of the visitors. This resort area receives an average annual snowfall of around 260 inches per year. The Purgatory Ski Resort also produces artificial snow of approximately one-fifth of the San Juan Mountain. The elevation of the summit is 10,822 feet or 3,299 meters and the vertical drop of the summit is 2,029 feet or 618 meters
