The
City Council voted to give the financially struggling Spirit Mountain
$235,000on Monday night, though the decision stimulates calls for discussions about the local ski hill’s financial sustainability. A handful of residents
urged council members to approve the spending, displaying Spirit Mountain as an
economic asset for the tourism industry and a beloved park of the locals which
holds years of memories.
The
City Council has voted 8-1 to fulfill the ski hill’s request. They will use
excess tourism tax dollars that were not for other projects. Spirit Mountain
last season’s net loss was estimated at more than $500,000. Executive Director
Brandy Ream told that the mountain would close without a cash infusion of
$235,000 to cover the losses.
