There is a jump in the number of complaints regarding the increase in foreign residents in Niseko, known for its famous ski resorts in Hokkaido. Many locals raised several issues with most of the people expressing dissatisfaction about how foreign residents dispose of their garbage or show poor driving etiquette. Though the town has added explanations in English on how to separate garbage but their efforts seem to have come up short as not much improvement has been seen. It is now straining relations between the local Japanese and foreign residents.
One local says that “It’s difficult living here with the growing number of foreign residents.” As of January, the total foreign residents comprised around 10 percent of the population in the town of Niseko.
