Whitewater Ski Resort

Whitewater Ski Resort: Powder Destination – Simplified

The story goes back to the year 1932 when skiing began in Nelson, British Columbia. One of the first lodges came about in 1934 which was located at the northern end of the town. It had a small rope tow which was driven by the rear axle of a very old Ford Model T.

Later on, it was moved to the site of the old Silver King Mine which was located in the south of Nelson. Numerous local families had built small ski lifts and log cabin lodges back in 1956 and on the opening day of the resort 175 of the beginners were given lessons. A few years down the line in 1961 the Silver King Lodge was erected allowing a cozy and homely atmosphere for their guests. One can always find someone or the other at the Whitewater today who shared some of those potluck dinners, or parties back in those days. Their recollected memories are beautiful and express the deep history of the area.

As the decade of the 1960s approached its end, it was at this time that the Whitewater Ski Area was discovered. And, all the credit goes to the astute eyes of Tex Mowatt and John Stanger. The two of them were businessmen by profession and adventure lovers. In the year 1969 the both of them in association with the Silver King Ski Club commenced the development of the Whitewater basin and in no time, rather over 9,000 work hours later the resort area transformed into a full-fledged resort. Numerous facilities were installed over a period of 6 years since the development commenced. Over the years the Whitewater Ski Area has changed numerous hands and also has expanded considerably.

Everybody who comes here cannot help but fall in love with the multiuse and Nordic trails. These trails are a complete original design and definitely are a feat of innovation and design. The Whitewater Ski Resort is located at a distance of just 20 minutes from Nelson and is influenced by its thriving artistic and cultural scene.

  2. People ahead have the right-of-way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  3. Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.
  4. Before starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

  6. Always use proper devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  7. Observe and obey all posted signs and warnings.
  8. Keep off closed trails and closed areas.
  9. You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through use of drugs or alcohol.
  10. You must have sufficient physical dexterity, ability, and knowledge to safely load, ride and unload lifts. If in doubt, ask the lift attendant.

The same institution also requires you to observe the following – Nordic Skier’s Responsibly Code which is basically in addition to the ones that are mentioned above:

  1. Ski in indicated direction and observe all signs
  2. Ski to the right when passing or skiing a double track.
  3. Descending skiers always have the right of way.
